The First Nations Technology Council Conference is fast approaching, and CIER staff are happy to be part of the fun! Merrell-Ann Phare will be delivering a luncheon keynote (Friday, March 19) on First Nations water rights, and Reegan D. Breu will be delivering a workshop (Saturday, March 20) on the CIER library. Registration for the upcoming Terry Tobias workshop is now closed, as 25 individuals have registered and we've reached the maximum workshop capacity. Thanks to everyone who expressed interest in participating, and we look forward to meeting and learning with you in April!

With Environment Canada’s help, CIER was able to invite assist thirty (30) Aboriginal people from a broad range of ecozones and ecoregions in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta to participate in the 2010 Prairie Conservation and Endangered Species Conference (PCESC). Attendance at the PCESC helped participants to build relationships with each other, with researchers, and with governments. Participants also increased their capacity to protect and recover species at risk and their habitat. A major theme of the conference was about the importance of partnering with land users, including First Nations, as the most effective way to protect endagered species and even the prairie landscape itself.

It was nice to see that there are people out in the real world trying protect the animals. There was a lot of good information that I can use here at home. The presentation that I liked was getting the youth active on protecting environment and protecting species that are in need of  help.

In a previous post, we informed you about the possibility of a CIER-hosted Terry Tobias workshop - “Best practices for the documentation of spatial knowledge”. We're happy to announce that 15 people registered (the minimum required), so what was a possibility has become a reality!

Some more good news is that we have 10 spots remaining, so if you'd like to register, please contact us no later than March 31, 2010.

Registration cost for the workshop is $300 per person. Registration will cover:

* The 2-day workshop delivered by Terry Tobias
* Workshop materials (maps, mylar, pens)
* Lunch for two days

CIER's Executive Director, Merrell-Ann Phare, will be participating in a live APTN InFocus broadcast on environmental issues on March 12th at 5:00pm CST. 
 
During this live panel discussion, a variety of environmental issues will be discussed such as: potential watershed pollution by industrial development, mercury poisoning, and First Nation water quality issues and management.
