Sustainable First Nation Communities and a Healthy Environment

Protecting Lands and Waters

Protecting Lands and Waters - Main - WomanEighty percent of Aboriginal peoples live on lands that are also home to most of Canada’s forests and waters. Throughout Canada, many of these areas are under threat due to overuse, pollution, and neglect. Often, First Nations have little or no voice in the activities that occur on their lands and waters.

CIER is committed to working with First Nations to restore and preserve First Nation lands and waters. Our priorities are to:

  • Help identify threats to the health of First Nation lands and waters, so that action can be taken to minimise or eliminate impacts.
  • Develop strategies, tools and options for sustainable use of lands and waters and the resources they contain.
  • Promote restoration and protection of the health and integrity of First Nation lands and waters.
